How to Use Engagement Marketing in Your Quiz Strategy

Create your own engaging quiz

Power up your engagement marketing strategy

In the words of Maya Angelou, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you make them feel.”

That quote couldn’t ring more true—especially when it comes to an effective marketing strategy for your biz!

When capturing your audience’s attention, it’s all about creating a memorable experience. Because let’s face it: it doesn’t matter how great your products and services are if no one’s talking about them.

Making a mark in your industry requires offering an experience your target market can’t resist talking about—and here’s where engagement marketing comes in handy.

In this article, I’ll walk you through three key strategies to take your quiz from a set of questions and answers to a full-on experience that your audience will remember.

What is engagement marketing?

Engagement marketing, also known as “experiential marketing,” is a strategy that invites an audience to interact with a business in real time.

And while “real time” technically refers to real-life events, you can still create an impactful and memorable experience in the online world (which I’ll get into later).

With engagement marketing, you create a lasting connection between customers and your brand by offering a real-time situation where your audience can directly experience your brand in a tangible way.

Let’s look at a couple of examples:

  • Live stream events and online panels
  • Trade shows or kiosk events that include samples of a product or service
  • Business events, festivals, or award ceremonies
  • Retreats or unique experiences that tell a story about a brand

You might ask, “How the heck do I insert engagement marketing into my quiz?” And hey, I feel you!

But I’ll also tell you that though it may seem tough at first glance, there is a way! A few key quiz-writing strategies will ensure your audience is left wanting more of what you’ve got. So let’s take a look.

Create engaging quiz content

Remember, first impressions are everything—I mean, everything.

It’s been said that it only takes about seven seconds for a person to make an assumption about who you are upon meeting you. The same goes for your brand, which means the same goes for your quiz!

But before worrying about amping up your engagement marketing strategy, take a deep breath and start with what you’ve got—your content.

When creating your quiz, there are several ways you can beef up your content to make it memorable—in this case, we’ll focus on three main areas:

  • Your title and topic
  • Your results
  • Your questions

First thing first: choose an exciting and engaging quiz topic. The best way to do this is by figuring out what your audience cares about the most.

What burning question do they have? What are they constantly asking you about? What’s their primary pain point? Ask yourself these questions before determining your quiz topic and title.

Your audience should feel excited and inspired to take your quiz, so it’s essential to figure out what they most want to learn about themselves! You’re sure to get the right answers if you ask the right questions. If you need a little more inspiration on choosing a title, refer to The Quiz Course

Here’s an example of a compelling quiz topic and title:

Next up, your results!

One of the most effective ways to make your quiz experience memorable is to amp up your results page.

Think about it: Your quiz-taker just spent time answering a series of questions to lead them to this pivotal moment. Now is their chance to learn about who they are and where they stand in relation to your quiz topic.

Your results are where your audience goes to feel seen and validated. It’s where they go to learn something valuable about themselves, which will further inspire them to buy your course, invest in your services, or purchase your product.

Because the results page holds such weight and impact, now is your time to shine by adding engagement value.

You can do this by titling your results to make your audience feel seen and give them a sense of pride. For example, if your quiz title is, “What’s your digital marketing style?” one of your results may be “The savvy social media expert.” This result title gives the reader a sense of validation with a positive spin.

You’ll also want your results to be specific enough in each category that they leave a mark on your end user. If you overgeneralize or leave out valuable information, you may lose your quiz-taker’s interest.

Here’s a great example from Jenna Kutcher’s quiz results that left me feeling seen:

Now, let’s look at the final ingredient to make your quiz an experiential masterpiece—your questions!

To make your quiz even more engaging and memorable, your questions should be direct, insightful, and fun!

If your audience is disinterested in your quiz questions, they will likely fall off and not complete the quiz. So keep your questions short and sweet: one to two sentences max!

You’ll also want to keep the number of questions to a minimum. Too many questions can feel overwhelming and leave less of an imprint. We typically recommend that quizzes have seven to ten questions, including a blend of scenario-based questions, segmentation questions, and some that are just plain light-hearted and fun.

Go above and beyond

Creating an exceptional quiz comes down to going above and beyond. Sure, you can have great questions, a compelling title, and a result that leaves your user feeling seen, but the real secret sauce is how much extra value you pack into your quiz experience.

So how do you do this?

By creating an incredible results page that has your audience nodding in agreement, that builds trust with you and your brand with every word.

You can add value to your results page in many ways. Here are a few of the most compelling:

  • Include engaging, high-resolution images throughout your results
  • Use descriptive copy that works hard to send a message to your audience
  • Embed links to high-quality, curated resources where users can learn more about their results and next steps to take
  • Offer a free resource, like a PDF, e-book, or link to your youtube channel
  • Follow up with an epic nurture sequence email to prime your audience to make a purchase!

The best part? You can achieve all this by using one of the many quiz templates inside the Interact quiz builder! Choose from hundreds of industry-specific templates to convert visitors into subscribers and buyers. Simply click “create new quiz” in the builder, select a template in your industry from the left sidebar, and customize it as you see fit!

Finally, one of the best ways to add value to your results page is through customized landing pages that outline the final results—which you can easily do with the Interact quiz builder! You can customize the landing page templates to include your logo and imagery, presenting your audience with a beautiful, on-brand quiz.

Creating customized landing pages for your results is a surefire way to create a memorable quiz-taking experience. Having results landing pages means you’ll have more space to house offerings, resources, result information, and anything else you’d like to share with your audience. They also pack a branding punch that you can customize to match your unique brand personality and style.

Below is an example of Jenna Kutcher’s quiz result landing page. I absolutely love the way she went above and beyond to make a lasting impression with her result pages.

Wrapping up

So, there you have it: proof that you can apply an engagement marketing strategy to your quiz writing process! All you need is the right plan, engaging content, next-level questions, and value-packed results. Before you know it, you’ll be on your way to giving your audience a quiz they’ll remember forever.

But before you embark on your quiz writing journey, keep these hot tips in your back pocket to really hit that engagement mark:

  • Make your cover page memorable. Remember, first impressions matter. Images speak volumes, so make sure to use an image that your audience will find exciting. Also, write a punchy quiz title that asks your audience a specific question. For example, “What’s your money mindset?”
  • Include videos. Nothing makes a quiz experience more memorable than high-quality images and video content. Embed a video highlighting your quiz taker’s result on your results page. This will make your quiz more engaging, building trust with your audience.
  • Use those freebies! Offer a free e-book, PDF, or another resource about your quiz-taker’s results. Remember, the more value you offer, the more leads you’ll get.
