How viral news sites can use quizzes to drive massive traffic

I normally hate phrases like “massive traffic” in titles, it just feels like a viral news story. I normally hate phrases like “massive traffic” in titles, it just feels like a viral news story. However, when quizzes get 20,000+ views in a day, and that happens consistently, I feel like the phrase is not quite as ridiculous.

To date, we’ve had several viral news websites use Interact to create quizzes, but one sticks out in particular because of their consistent success with creating hit quizzes. The site is Eldeforma, it’s based out of Mexico, and has mastered the art of the quiz.

1. Pick topics that follow trends

A few days after the huge iphone 6 announcement, Eldeforma came out with this quiz, which asks if people are more like android or iphone. There are a lot of searches and even more hype going on around the new iphone at that point, so the quiz was a hit. This tactic is nice because it’s evergreen, stuff happens, and you can be there with a quiz to capitalize on that traffic.

2. Follow politics

Literally every country in the world has political headlines constantly flowing. Whether it’s an election or a scandal or a rare positive story about government, there is always something to be said. Especially around big events quizzes can be used to help people identify where they stand based on their personality traits. You can do a “Which candidate are you?” quiz or a “Which way should you vote?” quiz. Either way there will be plenty of controversy and discussion around the quiz.

The quiz pictured below about Mexico’s election was extremely popular, getting 4.2k likes on Facebook and driving over 50k visits.

3. Look to history

Another clever thing Eldeforma did was look backwards for quiz topics. On the 2nd of October there was a large event in Mexican history and Eldeforma made a quiz testing people’s knowledge of the event. This one is a nice way to fill out content and bring in some interesting historical factoids at the same time.

4.  Play off of already popular subjects

Sports teams, for example, are always doing something ridiculous, and are a great sources of subjects for quizzes. Other places to turn are celebrities, events, and weather phenomenon. Just pick out something that’s already popular and tap into that.
