It cannot tell you which outcome they want, what they have already tried, what is getting in the way, or what kind of help they would prefer next. A purchase shows what somebody chose, but not always why they chose it.

Sometimes the clearest way to understand a person is to ask.

A quiz makes that exchange useful on both sides. The person answers a small set of relevant questions and receives a result, recommendation, or next step. You receive direct information you can use to make the result and follow-up more relevant.

That direct, intentionally shared information is what marketers call zero-party data. The goal is not to collect as much of it as possible. The goal is to ask for the smallest amount of information that helps you give a better answer.

What zero-party data actually means

Forrester defines zero-party data as information a customer intentionally and proactively shares with a brand. It can include preferences, purchase intentions, personal context, and how the person wants the brand to recognize them.

Quiz answers can fit that definition because the person chooses to answer the questions. If somebody tells you their main goal, current stage, budget range, preferred style, or biggest obstacle, you did not infer it from a trail of clicks. They told you.

That does not mean every piece of information around a quiz is zero-party data.

The answers a person intentionally selects are zero-party data.

The quiz result can summarize or derive meaning from those stated answers.

Quiz starts, completions, page views, and email clicks are first-party behavioral data because you observe them on channels you operate.

A name or email address is contact and identity information. It may be intentionally provided, but by itself it does not tell you a preference, intention, or need.

Information bought or received from an outside data provider is not zero-party data merely because you later store it in your own system.

This distinction is useful because it stops you from treating every lead field as customer insight. An email address gives you a way to continue the relationship. The quiz answers tell you how to make that relationship more relevant.

Zero-party data is not automatically better data

A direct answer removes some guesswork, but it is still a self-reported answer. People can misunderstand a question, choose the closest imperfect option, answer aspirationally, or change their minds later.

Treat zero-party data as a clear statement of what the person told you in that moment. Do not turn one answer into a permanent identity.

The best questions are specific enough to guide the current experience and easy to update when the person’s situation changes. “What do you need help with right now?” is often more useful than “What type of person are you forever?”

Why a quiz is a strong zero-party data experience

Forrester’s 2025 guidance on collecting zero-party data emphasizes short, simple experiences with a clear value exchange. It names quizzes, quick polls, and website widgets as ways to ask people directly and highlights product recommendations, segmentation, and market research as practical uses.

That framing matters. The value is not that the quiz disguises a form. The value is that the person can see why the questions matter and receive something useful in return.

The business case does not depend on the disappearance of third-party cookies. Google changed its earlier plan to deprecate them, but tracking still cannot reliably answer many questions about intention, context, or preference. A quiz can ask those questions directly.

The trust side matters just as much. PwC’s 2025 Customer Experience Survey found that 53% of consumers thought sharing personal information was worthwhile when it made the brand experience smoother, while 93% said mishandling data would cause a brand to lose their trust.

The same study found that nine in ten consumers were willing to share some type of personal data for more personalized service, but willingness changed with the sensitivity of the information and the clarity of the benefit.

The practical lesson is simple: ask for less, explain the exchange, and use the answers where the person can see the benefit.

The six most useful kinds of zero-party data to collect with a quiz

You can ask about almost anything. That does not mean you should.

The following six categories are useful because each one can change the recommendation, result, or next step. You do not need all six in every quiz. Choose the few that matter to the decision your quiz is helping someone make.

1. Desired outcome

Ask what the person wants to accomplish, not only what describes them today.

Example question: “What would make the next three months feel most successful?” The answers might point to generating demand, converting existing attention, launching an offer, or freeing up time.

Use this answer to frame the result around the person’s goal and choose the most relevant next step. If every answer receives the same generic advice, the question is not doing useful work.

2. Current situation or stage

Two people can want the same outcome and need different starting points.

Example question: “Which best describes where you are now?” A beginner may need a simple foundation, while someone with an established audience may need help converting attention into an owned relationship.

Use stage to adjust the entry point, examples, and level of complexity. Do not use it to make a person feel behind.

3. Constraints and requirements

A preference tells you what somebody likes. A constraint tells you what must be true for the recommendation to work.

Example question: “What is most likely to limit your progress?” The answers might include time, budget, technology, confidence, or internal approval.

Use constraints to remove recommendations that are unrealistic. In a product quiz, that may mean compatibility, size, location, or price range. In a service quiz, it may mean pace, level of support, or implementation capacity.

4. Preferences

Preferences help you choose between several options that could all work.

Example question: “How would you prefer to get help?” The person might choose a step-by-step template, a short training, personalized feedback, or hands-on support.

Use the answer to change format, tone, product match, content recommendation, or follow-up. Avoid asking decorative preference questions that never influence the experience.

5. History and prior attempts

What somebody has already tried can prevent you from sending them back to the same dead end.

Example question: “Which approach have you already tried?” Use the response to acknowledge their experience, skip repetitive advice, and explain why the next recommendation is different.

History is also useful in aggregate. If a large share of your audience has tried one solution without getting the outcome they wanted, that can shape your content, product education, and positioning.

6. Readiness and intended next step

Readiness helps you choose a responsible call to action. It should not be used to pressure someone.

Example question: “What would you like to do next?” The answers might be learn the basics, compare options, create a plan, or get help implementing.

Use the answer to offer a next step that matches the person’s stated intent. Someone who is researching should not be pushed into the same action as someone who asked to speak with a specialist.

Build the data plan before you write the quiz

The strongest zero-party data quizzes begin with actions, not fields.

Before writing questions, decide what you are prepared to do differently based on each answer.

A useful answer should change at least one part of the experience:

The result or recommendation the person receives.

The explanation or example shown on the result page.

The content, product, or service presented next.

The segment, tag, group, or custom field saved in your email or CRM platform.

The first follow-up message or automation path.

An aggregate decision about content, product development, or customer education.

If an answer changes none of those things, consider removing the question.

Use a question-to-action map

A simple question-to-action map keeps the quiz focused. For each proposed question, write down four things: what you are asking, why you need it, what the person gets from answering, and what your system will do with the response.

Here is a fictional service-business example for a quiz called “What Kind of Support Will Help You Make Progress?”

Question 1: What do you want to accomplish?

Immediate use: Frame the result around the desired outcome. For example, you might retain goal, primary constraint, preferred format, and intended next step while leaving decorative or conversational answers inside the quiz analytics.

Use names your team can understand six months later. A field called “Primary goal” is easier to maintain than “Quiz Q3.” A tag called “Prefers guided support” is clearer than “Answer B.”

Also decide which system is the source of truth. If quiz answers go to an email platform, CRM, and spreadsheet with different names, the data will drift. Keep the model small enough that you can update it everywhere it matters.

Use the data at two levels

Use it for the individual person

The first use is immediate personalization. The Result should reflect what the person told you, the next recommendation should fit, and the first follow-up should acknowledge the quiz or outcome that brought them in.

You do not need a large automation tree to do this well. A broad Result plus one or two decisive answers can make the first message substantially more relevant.

Use it to understand the audience

The second use is aggregate learning. Look at the distribution of Results and answers to see what your audience wants, where they are stuck, and which constraints appear most often.

Then connect the answers to outcomes that matter. Compare quiz completion, opt-in, recommendation clicks, replies, purchases, bookings, or another appropriate next action. The purpose is not to prove that one answer caused the outcome. It is to find patterns worth investigating and improve the experience.

Respecting privacy is part of the value exchange

Zero-party data is a marketing term, not a separate legal category and not a permission slip. Information can be intentionally shared and still be personal information subject to privacy, data-protection, consumer-protection, and electronic-marketing rules.

Use a few durable principles:

Tell people what you are collecting and why.

Collect only what is necessary for the stated purpose.

Do not treat answering a quiz as blanket permission for unrelated marketing.

Make marketing choices and consent controls clear for the audience and jurisdiction you serve.

Avoid sensitive information unless it is truly necessary and you have qualified guidance on collecting, securing, using, and deleting it.

Give people a reasonable way to correct, update, or delete information where required.

Set a retention practice so old quiz answers are not treated as permanently current.

The ICO’s data minimisation guidance says organizations should identify the minimum amount of personal data needed for the purpose and hold no more than that. The California Attorney General’s CCPA overview explains that covered businesses must provide notice at collection describing the categories of personal information collected and the purposes for using them.

Requirements differ by location, audience, information type, and use. Get qualified legal guidance for your situation, especially before collecting health, financial, biometric, information about children, or other sensitive data. This article is general information, not legal advice.

Common zero-party data mistakes

Asking questions because they are interesting, even though no answer changes the experience.

Calling an email address a preference and assuming contact information alone creates personalization.

Collecting sensitive or detailed information before earning trust or establishing a real need.

Making the person complete the quiz and opt in before giving any visible value.

Sending the same result and follow-up regardless of what the person said.

Mapping every answer into permanent fields that nobody maintains or uses.

Assuming a voluntarily answered question creates consent for every future purpose.

Treating one answer as a permanent fact instead of a statement that may need to be refreshed.

Publishing without testing the field mapping, tags, automations, privacy link, skip behavior, and live Result.

Maintain the system as the questions and offers change

A zero-party data quiz is a promise that you will listen. When the question changes, the answer choices change, or the business changes what it offers, the data system needs to change with it.

Review the quiz regularly. Confirm that each question still affects a useful decision, each Result still reflects the available answers, each mapped field still exists, and each automation still delivers the promised next step.

Retire fields you no longer use. Update language that no longer matches how your audience describes the problem. Re-ask questions that become stale instead of quietly carrying an old answer forever.

The simplest test is this: if someone looked at everything you stored about them, would the collection and its use make sense in light of the quiz they chose to take?

Frequently asked questions

Are quiz answers zero-party data?

Yes, when the person intentionally provides the answers. The behavior you observe around the quiz, such as starting, completing, or clicking, is first-party behavioral data.

Is an email address zero-party data?

It is intentionally provided contact information, but it does not express a preference or intention by itself. Treat the email address as personal and identity data, then use the quiz answers to understand what the person wants or needs.

Does zero-party data automatically mean consent?

No. A person can voluntarily answer a question without agreeing to every possible use of the answer or to ongoing marketing. Be clear about the purpose, applicable choices, and the communication they are joining.

Can I personalize the result without collecting an email address?

Yes. You can use quiz answers to show a relevant Result or recommendation immediately. Email is useful when the person wants continued help and you have an appropriate way to collect and use it.

How many zero-party data questions should a quiz ask?

Ask as many as the recommendation needs, and no more. Remove any question whose answers do not change the Result, explanation, recommendation, segment, follow-up, or a real aggregate decision.

Should I save every quiz answer in my email platform or CRM?

Usually not. Save the final Result and the few answers that change how you help. Keep the data model small, understandable, and maintainable.

What if a person’s answer changes later?

Give them a way to update the preference, retake the quiz, or answer again when the question becomes relevant. Use the most recent appropriate statement and do not treat old context as a permanent identity.

The bottom line

Zero-party data is useful because it replaces a specific kind of guessing with a direct answer.

A good quiz asks what it needs to know, uses the answer immediately, and makes the next step more relevant. It does not collect information just because it can.

Start with one decision you want to help a person make. Work backward from the Result, recommendation, and follow-up. Ask only the questions that improve one of those moments. That is how a quiz turns volunteered information into clearer guidance without losing the trust that made the answer possible.

Find out all you
