The audience was growing. But we did not know who those people were, and there was no simple interaction for them to take other than making a purchase.

That is a huge gap.

Most people who discover your business are not thinking, “I want to buy from this person right now.”

They might be interested. They might want to hear more. They might be exactly the kind of person your business can help. But making a purchase is too big of a first step for most of them.

Without another step in between, all of that attention disappears.

That was the problem we were trying to solve when we started Interact in 2013. It is still the problem we are solving in 2026. The places where attention comes from have changed, but the underlying issue has not. Our current guide to email list growth with quizzes across websites, Instagram, YouTube, and podcasts shows how the same basic strategy now works across all of those channels.

Attention is useful, but it is not a relationship

There are businesses that make money purely by capturing attention and selling advertising against it.

That model can work.

But over the last 13 years, I have watched a lot of businesses that depend on traffic, views and followers. The ones that do not build a more direct connection with their audience tend to be much more exposed to changes they cannot control.

A social platform changes its algorithm. Search traffic declines. The type of content that used to work stops getting distributed. Suddenly, the business cannot reach the same people it spent years attracting.

This does not mean social media is bad. Social media is an incredible distribution tool.

But distribution is not the same thing as a relationship.

An email list creates a layer between somebody passively consuming your content and somebody being ready to make a purchase.

It is a group of people who have raised their hands and said, “I am interested enough in this topic that I would like to hear more.”

That permission matters.

On social media, almost every post has to earn attention from scratch. You are trying to reach new people, stay relevant and make the topic broadly interesting enough that somebody stops scrolling.

Email is different.

Once somebody joins your list, you have permission to be more specific. You can go deeper into a topic. You can share more nuanced ideas. You can tell longer stories. You can follow up when you have something particularly relevant to offer.

Most importantly, you have another channel through which to build a relationship.

That relationship usually needs time. Most people are not going to discover you on Tuesday and make a major purchase on Wednesday.

The email list gives you the time and the space to continue being useful.

This is why moving social media followers onto an email list is so important. The email address is not valuable because it is another number in a database. It is valuable because it represents permission to continue the relationship.

Why would someone join your email list?

This is where a lot of businesses get stuck.

You can put a form on your website that says, “Join our newsletter.”

But that request is mostly about you.

You are asking the person to care enough about your company that they want more messages from it. That can work when someone is already a fan. It is not always a compelling first step for someone who has just discovered you.

A quiz changes the exchange.

A quiz starts with the person’s self-interest.

It offers to answer a question they already have:

What career is right for me?

What is my attachment style?

Which car is right for my family?

Why do I keep getting overwhelmed?

Which product is best for my needs?

Where should I start?

The person is not taking the quiz because they woke up wanting to join another email list.

They are taking it because they want an answer.

That is what makes the quiz such a natural bridge. It gives somebody a reason to interact with your business before they are ready to buy from it.

People are endlessly curious about themselves

I recently watched the Kevin Hart movie 72 Hours. At one point, a mattress quiz shows up as part of the joke.

The joke works because nobody needs the concept of a mattress quiz explained to them. Everybody understands the format. You answer some questions about yourself and receive a personalized recommendation.

Quizzes show up constantly in popular culture because people are endlessly curious about themselves.

Who am I?

Why do I behave this way?

What am I naturally good at?

What should I do next?

What belongs in my life?

The desire for self-knowledge did not begin with the internet. The instruction to “know thyself” has been discussed for thousands of years. Technology changes, but that part of human nature does not.

That is the fundamental reason quizzes work.

They make the person taking the quiz the center of the experience.

Instead of saying, “Here is more information about our business,” the quiz says, “Let’s talk about you.”

We explore this in more detail in our article on the psychology of why people take quizzes.

Across Interact quizzes, 40.1% of the people who start a lead-generation quiz become leads. That does not mean 40.1% of every website visitor joins an email list. It means that once someone chooses to begin the quiz, just over four out of ten provide their information, according to our 2026 quiz conversion rate report.

That happens because the business has created a useful exchange.

The person answers questions. The business provides a personalized result. The person can then choose whether they want to continue the relationship.

The expertise behind the quiz matters

The best quizzes are not generic.

They are built by people who have spent years studying a problem, working with customers and noticing patterns.

A dietitian understands the common reasons people struggle with nutrition.

A career coach recognizes recurring career types.

An attachment expert knows the patterns that appear in relationships.

A car expert knows which questions need to be answered before recommending a vehicle to a family.

The quiz turns that expertise into a structured experience that can help someone at any time of day.

This is not an argument against AI. AI is great for a lot of things. We use it throughout our own product, and it can be extremely useful for organizing ideas, creating a first draft or making information more accessible.

But when a question becomes deeply personal or consequential, the source of the answer still matters.

People want to know that the framework behind the recommendation came from someone who understands the problem.

That is especially clear in health. A 2026 Pew Research Center study found that 85% of Americans get health information from health care providers at least sometimes, compared with 22% who say the same about AI chatbots. Among people who use each source, 65% rate provider information as highly accurate, while views of AI chatbot information are much more mixed.

A strong quiz combines the efficiency of technology with the credibility and judgment of a human expert.

It is essentially a scalable version of the first few minutes of a consultation.

Advice With Erin turned social attention into 140,000 email subscribers

One of the clearest examples is Erin McGoff, the founder of Advice With Erin.

Erin creates career content for millions of people across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and her newsletter. As that audience grew, she kept hearing versions of the same question:

“What should I do with my life and career?”

Erin had spent enough time speaking with people to recognize six recurring career profiles. She turned those patterns into her Career Type Quiz.

The Career Type Quiz asks relevant questions, identifies the person’s profile and gives them a personalized explanation of their strengths, challenges and possible career directions.

It has generated more than 140,000 leads.

The process is relatively simple. Someone discovers Erin through social content. They take the quiz because they want clarity about their career. They receive a personalized answer. They can then join Erin’s email list for a more detailed breakdown and continue receiving her advice.

The quiz creates a bridge between broad social media attention and a direct relationship that Erin can continue building over time.

You can hear the full story in the Interact Podcast conversation with Erin McGoff and see the strategy broken down in the Advice With Erin case study.

Dr. Morgan built an expert-led growth engine that runs on its own

Dr. Morgan’s attachment style quiz is another strong example.

People are naturally curious about their attachment style because it helps them understand patterns in their relationships. But this is also an area where credibility matters. People do not just want a random label. They want an explanation from someone who understands attachment theory and has worked with people navigating these issues.

Dr. Morgan launched her quiz in 2020. It has since added more than 40,000 people to her email list and continues to operate as a passive growth engine for her business.

The quiz introduces someone to Dr. Morgan’s expertise in a useful, low-pressure way.

The person receives insight into themselves. Dr. Morgan earns permission to continue the conversation through email. Over time, the subscriber can explore her podcast, educational products and other ways of working with her.

The quiz works because the topic is timeless. The technology delivers the experience, but the expertise behind the framework is what makes the result credible.

You can listen to the Interact Podcast episode with Dr. Morgan, take her Attachment Style Quiz, and read the full Dr. Morgan quiz case study.

The Car Mom uses a quiz as the front door of the business

Quizzes do not always have to tell someone about their personality.

They can also help someone make a complicated decision.

Kelly Stumpe, the founder of The Car Mom, has built an audience by helping families choose safer and more practical vehicles.

The problem is that every family needs something different.

How many children do they have? Do they use car seats? Do they need a third row? How much cargo space matters? What type of driving do they do? What compromises are they willing to make?

Kelly can answer those questions through a personal consultation, but she cannot personally consult with every person who visits her website.

Her family car quiz takes the logic behind that consultation and turns it into an experience that can run 24 hours a day.

The quiz asks roughly seven questions, recommends a vehicle and gives the person a way to explore other relevant options. It is prominently featured on The Car Mom website and has become the company’s top email-list growth tool.

This is what it means for a quiz to become the front door of a business.

Instead of expecting someone to understand every article, product and service available, the business begins by asking, “What do you need?”

You can hear Kelly explain the strategy in the Interact Podcast episode with The Car Mom and see the experience broken down in The Car Mom quiz case study.

A quiz does not need a complicated funnel to be valuable

There is a tendency in marketing to make everything more complicated than it needs to be.

You start with the idea of a quiz, and suddenly you are planning 14 branches, 27 email automations, five offers and an entirely new content system.

That can become overwhelming very quickly.

The immediate personalized experience is already valuable.

The quiz helps someone understand themselves, identify a problem or choose a direction. That is the first job.

From there, the follow-up can be relatively simple.

You can send a more detailed explanation of the result. You can send a useful weekly email. You can occasionally recommend a relevant product, service or piece of content.

The quiz result can also help you make that follow-up more specific. Somebody who receives one result may need something different from someone who receives another.

But you do not need a massive automation system before you launch.

You need a question your audience genuinely wants answered, a useful set of results and a way for people to remain connected afterward.

Our guide to building an email list using quizzes goes deeper into that process. For the practical build steps, there is also our guide on how to make a lead-generation quiz.

The traffic sources changed, but human nature did not

When we started Interact, the website was the primary place where this interaction happened.

Today, attention might start on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, a podcast or somewhere else entirely.

But the basic problem is exactly the same.

Someone gives you a moment of attention.

Most of the time, they are not ready to buy.

You need a next step that is interesting enough for them to take and useful enough that it starts building trust.

A quiz creates that next step.

The person gives you information about themselves. You give them a personalized answer based on your expertise. They decide whether they want to continue hearing from you.

That is why we started Interact.

It was not because businesses needed another piece of interactive content on their websites.

It was because there was a missing step between attention and purchase.

That gap still exists.

People still want to understand themselves. They still want help making decisions. They still value recommendations from people who understand their problems.

As long as those things remain true, quizzes will remain one of the most natural ways to turn attention into an email relationship, and eventually into revenue.

We started Interact because our website was getting traffic, but almost none of that attention was turning into a relationship.
