Interoception is the ability to sense the inner state of your body. We receive internal signals (which some refer to as a sixth sense) that manifest in sensations like a gut feeling. The greater our inner awareness and the better we understand how we feel, the more power we have to handle life's challenges and to make positive choices. When trauma is present, a person’s interoceptive ability is reduced because past traumatic energy remains active inside the body, resulting in various physical, mental, and emotional discomforts. Many people who suffer from trauma learn to numb these uncomfortable sensations as a means of protecting themselves. The discomfort, overwhelm, and subsequent numbing unintentionally deadens a person's inner awareness, which also serves as the source of their power. Interoception is a skill that can be improved, both in terms of increasing awareness and increasing accuracy of what is sensed.
