The Impostor
The key traits of the 'Impostor'...An Impostor often battles with insecurities, feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. Regardless of their many skills, a wealth of experience and past success stories, the Imposter will typically sabotage these truths and put them down to luck, convenience, or credit someone else for their helping hand.
Seeing only what they want to see to validate this deep-rooted belief that they’re not successful or good enough (even though they almost certainly are), often leaves the Impostor dumbfounded when for example, they’re considered or even been offered, sought-after career opportunities, life-experiences, or invited to speak or share their views alongside their peers and/or established leaders in their field. With a tendency to focus more on their failures, the Impostor will rack their brain to understand how they have found themselves in this position, wincing at the thought that people will in time discover, their perceived truth.
These traits are also notable when the Impostor is wanting to step out of their comfort zone, for instance, to launch their new business venture, to up-level their career, take the stage to share their message or prepare for an exciting new goal or opportunity. They will often procrastinate or in some cases, withdraw from their dream altogether, due to their high standards about how things should be done, coupled with their lack of self-confidence and feelings of inferiority.
Their inner critic will say things like...
“you’re not nearly experienced or qualified enough to be a success”
“stop now, you can’t possibly do this, you’re kidding yourself - you’re not like them”…
…and whilst the Impostor keeps thinking like an Impostor, it will, unfortunately, become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The key is for the Impostor to challenge these unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, to empower themselves with the tools to silence their inner critic, so they can rewrite their story and be the person they want to be and achieve what they want to achieve – whilst enjoying the journey, without the stress, anxiety, drama and struggle.Want access to a simple 3-Step Strategy you can use, to begin bridging the gap between where you are, to where you want to be?
