A Gift
You've answered mostly yes to our list of age-appropriate characteristics so while your child may not be gifted they are truly a gift!This is an opportunity to know and celebrate your child.Knowing giftedness is tricky, there are a bunch of characteristics professionals agree on but children don't have to have them all and usually don't. Giftedness is expressed uniquely in each child and the challenge is to understand this and unravel it. For example, some gifted kids read before school but others don't. Some gifted kids have intense interests and some don't.Children who perform well at school are often high achievers; children who are highly intelligent and performing at the top of their peer group. Gifted kids can be high achievers but often aren't because they don't fit into their peer group as well as high achievers. Yeah, it's complicated. That's why even academics struggle to agree on one definition of gifted.There is a common misconception that being gifted is somehow better than not being gifted, sometimes people congratulate me that my kids are gifted but it's not an achievement. It's just a way of being. All kids have strengths and weaknesses, all kids have a spark and something important to contribute to the world. Our mission is to ensure all kids have the chance to thrive. Not being gifted just means you look at the world in other ways, you have different characteristics, strengths and weaknesses.
