Your child's personality is...explorer
As a parent to an explorer child, you may be unsure of whether or not your child is picking up what you are putting down. After all, they haven't slowed down for long enough to let you know what they know. These kids were probably early to walk, and either on time or a bit late to talking. When an explorer learns language, you might wonder if you are doing enough, because they don't seem to sit still for structured activities. The explorer benefits from activities that incorporate movement with language. Take advantage of your child's fearless attitude to create obstacle courses that will be fun and focus your child enough to truly build language. How to help your explorer learn language...1. Give them the language for movementThe explorer tends to be more focused when movement is involved, so focus on verbs (go, jump, hop) before nouns (ball, cup, dog) which their active little mind will find more useful. 2. Use hand signals or colors to help slow your child downSometimes explorers are a little too quick for their own good. Teach them to slow down their bodies by using hand signals or colors (red for stop, green for go) which can then be used to slow down speech and make them a little easier to understand. 3. Create motor-based learning activitiesBy creating scenarios where your child has to move, they are more engaged, and more likely to interact. Make an obstacle course for your explorer by placing a blanket over some chairs for them to climb through to get puzzle pieces to name, or use colored circles with pictures to create a hopping game.
