Get going on that exit plan!
It's not a matter of if you leave. It's a matter of when and how. You’ve done everything you can to excel and do your best work here, but at the end of the day you, this job, the organization, and/or the environment are not a good fit. You might even be at that point where the job feels soul-crushing. During your work day you wish you were somewhere else. The job might even be negatively impacting your health, e.g. insomnia. You’re taking more sick time for mental health days. Maybe you never sought to have a career in Administration, but years later, here you are. Your career goals may actually be in a completely different industry doing very different work. And now you feel stuck. You’re afraid to shake up some shit because of all the uncertainty about what comes next. Three Tips for A Confident & Graceful Departure 1. Assess your financials How are your savings? If you have a comfortable amount of money saved up, take time to consider the following:How many months can you afford to give yourself the gift of recharging, identifying what you want, searching for the next opportunity, and procuring that opportunity? If you don't feel comfortable using savings, consider the following:How much would you need to save in order to feel comfortable leaving your job?Why not commit to recharging, identifying what you want, searching for the next opportunity and procuring that opportunity while you continue working your current job? Then investigate those options.Decide a resignation date and commit to doing what you have to do in order to resign on that day. 2. Increase your self-care and dream bigBe diligent about replenishing your batteries throughout the week and especially on your days off. Redeem your accrued time off. You've earned it so use it. Attend workshops and seminars on topics that enliven you. Daydream. Schedule staycations and unplug from technology. During this time, connect with your vision for your life. Consider what you really want to be doing. Identify your income goal for the year and set your sights on work that fulfills that. Move your body in enjoyable ways...often. When you feel good about yourself and how you spend your time outside of work, your energy levels and outlook will improve when you're at work.3. Excel at your job all the way to the endDouble down on your contributions to the work place. You know you're on your way out, but that doesn't mean you divorce your life force from the workday. Let your knowledge that you're leaving serve as fuel to motor you through your phone calls, meetings, organizing, filing, and conversations. Bonus: You'll increase the likelihood of receiving stellar recommendations from your boss and colleagues.
