You like stories and ant to learn more about God's people and their story, but the Old Testament is daunting. To get started, I'd recommend Genesis, which includes the creation of the world, how sin entered the world, and God's covenant with Abraham, among other things. Don't worry if you've heard some of the stories before, you can still learn something by reading it firsthand!
You're a new Christian, a Christian who wants to read the Bible on their own, or someone who's just exploring. To get started, I'd recommend the gospel of John, one of the four accounts of Jesus's life. Once you get through that one, you can move on to another (Matthew, Mark, or Luke) if you want.
You like songs and poetry, or you're seeking inspiration, encouragement, or wisdom. Psalms includes a variety of praises and songs that can be very inspiring for prayer or worship, and can be encouraging. Proverbs includes several wise sayings and yes, proverbs, that are short and easy to read.
