A TENDENCY TO PROCRASTINATE
The one thing blocking you from your best life ever is a tendency to procrastinate.Putting things off. Waiting till the last minute. Telling yourself and everyone around you, “Yeah, yeah, I’m totally gonna do that...tomorrow.”Sound familiar? Sure does to me. It doesn’t matter how productive or driven you are, if you’re human, there are times you procrastinate.Now, wait a second. Is procrastination really as bad as it’s cracked up to be?The answer is... wait for it...It depends.Not all forms of procrastination are created equal.Are you procrastinating because something doesn't feel right? Are you putting it off because deep down inside you know you need to call it off?Maybe you are mapping things out before you jump into action mode. That’s not procrastination. That’s planning. And planning is crucial when it comes to important work because it gives you clarity and direction.At times you may be putting off a task to address another pressing matter. Knowing when to reprioritize your priority list is a part of strategic thinking.The three examples above, with many more that I haven’t listed here, are situations when procrastination is helpful.In other words, if, in a particular situation, delaying action is different from a run-of-the-mill “wait till the last minute” habit, then procrastination, in that instance, may be a good thing.That said, let's not confuse uncharacteristic procrastination with habitual, chronic procrastination.Why do people procrastinate?Procrastination doesn’t mean you’re lazy, disorganized, or bad at time management. Getting organized and better time management might help you be more productive, but ending chronic procrastination is a whole different beast. Procrastination stems from our beliefs and emotions as much as from our actions. We procrastinate because of:💠 Fear of failure💠 Difficulty making decisions💠 Rebellion against control💠 Lack of self-confidence💠 Trouble being assertive💠 Dislike for the task💠 Anxiety about being judged💠 Perfectionism💠 Fear of successThe overarching indicator? Fear.We procrastinate because we’re afraid. We’re afraid of what will happen when we actually get up and do something. We could fail or be judged. We could succeed and face consequences like more responsibility and higher expectations.Procrastination feels safe. But it also keeps you from doing… anything.Procrastination is universal, but some people are more prone to it than others. You might be more likely to put things off if you struggle with self-esteem, assertion, confidence, decision-making, or perfectionism.Additionally, research says you might procrastinate more often if you live with mental health issues like: 💠 Depression, which makes you likely to put off even simple tasks.💠 Anxiety, which could increase your fear of failure, judgment, or making the wrong decision.💠 Obsessive-compulsive disorder, because compulsive activities can distract you from things you want or need to get done.💠 ADD and ADHD, which are connected to distraction and poor organization.You may need to work with a doctor or therapist to address underlying mental health issues before you can tackle procrastination entirely. But...tackle it you must!Regardless of the underlying cause - whether it's a mental health issue or whether you're just putting off an important task - procrastination must be dealt with if you want to create a life you love!Here's a wild fact: This isn’t your fault. It was in fact implanted in you at a very early age!Procrastinators are made, not born. Yep, that’s right. You weren’t born with a habit of procrastination. But somewhere along the way, typically in the early childhood years, you acquired subconscious programming that led to procrastination. And that's good news! Because...What's learned can be unlearned. What's outdated can be updated.Bet you’re wondering “That's great, but can this be done in a way that's also FAST and LONG-LASTING?”Glad you asked. The short answer is YES!When you access your subconscious mind, you unlock an enormous vault of information. Things you saw, heard, felt, and experienced throughout your life (sometimes even before you were born) that have led you to form certain beliefs. When these deep, underlying, hidden negative beliefs are changed into positive, enabling, empowering ones, change happens from the inside out. And quickly!Think about it. Your subconscious mind is driving 95% of your thoughts, decisions, and actions, which directly impact your results. So, it only makes sense to start your transformative journey on a subconscious level, wouldn’t you agree?Your Personal Roadmap to an Extraordinary Life:Step 01: AcknowledgeThe first step to letting go of procrastination is to acknowledge that you’re doing it in the first place. I didn’t say “admit you’re a procrastinator” because I hate labels. Labels are an invitation to buy into an idea about yourself that doesn’t serve you well, and that makes it harder to change. By seeing it as a behavior, you can change it. It’s easier to change a behavior than something that's imprinted on your identity. As you acknowledge, think through situations that bring out your procrastination behavior most strongly. Is it when you are face to face with an important decision? Is it when you don’t enjoy the task, even if you know it must be done? Is it when you are afraid you might not get the polished results you want?Step 02: Screw The “Perfect Time” Too many creative and ambitious people believe that there’s some mystical “right time” to do everything. You’ll start exercising after the holiday parties. You’ll launch your business when your kids are older. You’ll write a book once you get the outline juuuust right. Then, guess what happens? While you’re waiting for the right time something else comes along, and the right time suddenly isn’t so right anymore. Stop with the excessive brainstorming, planning, waiting, researching, and strategizing! These. Are. Distractions. Get out there, and start the work — before you’re ready. Clarity requires action.Stop hiding behind books and websites. Instead, develop a bias for action. Make appointments. Have real-life conversations. You’ll learn more and make faster progress.Step 03: Prioritize YOU If you want to create an outstanding life — and I know you do — you have to take yourself seriously. Letting others set your priorities for you is an easy way to fall into a procrastination trap while still feeling productive. What others expect of us feels important in the moment, but it might just be an excuse to put off something harder (or scarier). You have to invest your resources - time, energy, money - to make room for what matters to you the most.What's the #1 outcome you are going for right now?Better health? A more fulfilling career? Growing your business? Deeper relationships? Finishing school? Get 120% clear on your desired outcome. Define, down to the detail, what success looks like. Then, prioritize it.Ignore invitations, emails, and other distractions that support your procrastination habit.Check yourself to make sure you’re not filling your day with busywork to avoid the tasks that really matter.Schedule your next action toward your desired outcome. Literally. Take out your calendar or your planner. Carve out dedicated time. Lock it in.Get your work done and leave everything else for later. If you don’t take yourself seriously, who will?
