To sum it up: Credit unions are non-profit financial institutions that exist to serve their members, who also own a small part of the credit union. Like banks, credit unions accept deposits, make loans, and provide many other financial products and services. But credit unions are owned and controlled by the members who use their services. Members vote each year on a volunteer board of directors to manage their credit union. Profits made by credit unions are returned back to the members in the form of reduced fees, higher savings rates, and lower loan rates.
