You want to know what to expect from your birthing facility *before* you show up in labor...(my guess is you're a wee-bit Type A like that.)Hospital-based classes are the best way to find out all the deets you want/need to know before it's baby-time. Providence Holy Family:Learn about pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum care; how to identify the signs of labor and what happens to your body as your baby makes his or her way into the world. Talk about your concerns with other women who have similar questions. Connect with your labor companion/coach. Discuss options for handling pain and coping with contractions, such as breathing techniques, relaxation and visualization. Get the basics on medical interventions and possible complications. Newborn basics: appearance, comforting the newborn, SIDS and breastfeeding. Whether you're a first-time mom or a delivery room veteran, our Certified Childbirth Class Instructors will give you the added confidence you need as you prepare for labor and the delivery of your baby! Multi-Care Deaconess: Childbirth education classes at Deaconess Hospital are taught by our labor and delivery nurses from the comfort of your own home where your questions will be answered by the same professionals who will be caring for you when you come to the hospital for delivery. This virtual crash course of comprehensive childbirth education will help you prepare for the birth experience you and your coach are striving for. Our experienced nurses will discuss the stages of labor, when to go to the hospital, what to expect when you arrive, comfort techniques, medical interventions, pain management options, C-sections, breastfeeding and postpartum recovery. Prepared childbirth is an open forum to ask any questions you need answered to build confidence and feel prepared for this exciting journey. Coping Skills for Un-medicated Labor
Whether you are planning for an unmedicated birth or would like to incorporate unmedicated birthing techniques to postpone an epidural, this class will help you feel more confident and prepared. Our experienced labor nurse will discuss unmedicated childbirth preparation, potential roadblocks, how to support the hormones of labor and avoid medical intervention, positions for different stages of labor, comfort and breathing techniques. This class is perfect for first time parents, who have already taken our Preparing for Childbirth class, or experienced parents who need a refresher on unmedicated childbirth coping skills.Breastfeeding
Like any new skill, breastfeeding takes knowledge and practice to be successful. Our breastfeeding classes are taught by our nurses who are also IBCLCs (International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants). They have years of experience assisting mothers during labor, delivery and the postpartum period. They are dedicated to preparing moms and babies for breastfeeding success and understand that while it is not always easy, when it all comes together it is a wonderful experience for both.Breastfeeding
Topics covered: Skin-to-skin, basics in milk supply, how to tell if you have a good latch and how to get one, recognizing infant hunger cues, potential difficulties in the early days of breastfeeding, use of pacifiers, returning to work – including when to start pumping and initiate bottle feeding – along with answering any other questions you have. This class is for mothers-to-be and their support person. This class can be taken as your due date draws near, shortly after delivery or those first six weeks after your baby is born.Life With Baby
After you have prepared for birth, it is important to think ahead for the future with your new baby! We will cover the highlights of what to expect when the baby gets here. This newborn basics class covers what to expect at the hospital from after delivery to those first weeks at home. You will learn about the golden hour, the immediate postpartum period and normal newborn care such as diapering, swaddling, sleeping, and bathing basics. This is a single evening class for moms only or moms and their birth partners- best scheduled after any of the childbirth classes.Daddy 101
This immersive class captures the unique experience fatherhood brings. Men will be inspired and feel better prepared as they transition into their new role. After completing the class, dads will gain a wide range of tools and skills they need to successfully navigate their child’s early stages. This course will cover labor & postpartum support, diapering, bathing, swaddling, feeding, safe sleep practice, infant car seat safety and stress management. Daddy 101 is an open forum to ask any questions you need answered to build confidence and be successful during this exciting transition period.
