Have you ever heard of an earworm? Because - oops, that’s what your insides are telling me about you right now.
Do you ever get the same song stuck in your head - and no matter how hard you try you just can’t get the catchy tune or lyrics out of your head? (that’s what an earworm is by the way) You know better than most how hard it is to “let go”. Your poop gave me a sneak peak into your gut, and it’s telling me you might be holding onto some things that are no longer serving you. This inability to surrender often causes us to swallow our emotions and hide the evidence (tell me I’m not the only one who has hidden a candy wrapper(s) before?). Maybe you tell yourself you can hide them now to deal with these emotions another day. But one day, you’ll hear that song again, and there it’ll be - threatening to plague your sanity until you - quite literally - want to explode. Because, in reality, these actions leave you feeling emotionally (and physically) constipated. I know you want to feel free, flexible, and to “go with the flow,” and you’re maybe wondering, “Should letting go be this dang hard?” It may seem like others can far more easily, but honestly, we all get a little stuck from time to time; sometimes emotions, like that catchy song, will stay until we find a better one to replace it with. But I’m not here to bum you out (pun intended ;). Let me show you what you can do about it:Ready to get unstuck? Here is what we suggest you try: 1. Calm the Nervous System. The current setup of the world is leaving far too many of us with constant low levels of stress with no release. This state leaves our cortisol constantly dripping, leading to a consistent low level of “fight, flight, or (especially in your case) freeze” mode. It’s now known that this is a leading factor of chronic inflammation. To “let go,” we need to switch gears to “rest and digest.” A simple and highly effective way to do this - is with our breath. Try the following cycle for 5 rounds:Inhale for 4 countsHold for 1 countExhale for 6 counts That longer exhale is cueing your body to relax and putting it in that “rest” state, ready to digest (both physically and emotionally).2. Face what you’re running from.Far easier said than done. But we need to try and clear some of what you’re holding onto emotionally if we want the body to follow suit. Block out some time in your busy schedule. Create a safe space, complete step 1, and keep a journal handy. After a few deep and grounding breaths, ask yourself: What am I holding onto that is no longer serving me? (emotions, experiences, etc.)You can repeat this sentence in your head 5 - 10 times and then write whatever comes up without restraint. (No holding back - or IN!)It seems too simple to work but you are divinely connected, trust your inner knowing. In order to release, we need to start with awareness. I’m always surprised at how the answers we need flow out quite willingly (and literally ;-) should we take the time to ask. 3. Take an inner bath. FACT: The majority of us are walking around dehydrated. If we want to flow like water we need to give water to our bodies. Have you ever noticed how your pee is extra yellow and sometimes a little smelly in our first wee of the morning? (Hey, I said there were no taboo topics!) This is because that first wee is ridding our body of all the toxins your liver spent all night working hard to clear. You’d never leave the house without a shower in the morning if you wake up feeling frowzy. And now you’re never going to leave the house without your inner bath either! We challenge you to help your liver with a big glass (aim for 450-750ml/15-25oz) of warm salty lemon water when you wake up in the morning, and then another one before you go to sleep. Yes, you’ll notice you need a few wee breaks at first, but as your body learns this routine, the wee breaks become less frequent, and you’ll be amazed how this inner bath every morning can act as the gentle “push” your body needs.GUESS WHAT?
