You may forget the need for movement and forward progress. If you think internal info like emotion or intuition is more important that external info you could miss out. You may sometimes let personal 'knowing' usurp client’s 'knowing'.3 Tips to Help You Be a Great Coach 👇(or mentor, pastor, basically anyone in helping professions)1. Tell your clients ahead of time that you really want to hear them out, but guide them in how to move from getting things off their chest to taking action and moving forward.People will always want to talk. And you will always want to listen. But at some point you must transition into the action-taking, result-getting flow they wanted coaching in. Sometimes you have to be the one who is aware enough to ask, "Ok, so are you ready to use what you shared with me as part of the map to transformation? Let's start creating vision for what the future looks like now that we know where you stand currently."2. Carry them to the Lord.You are a compassionate person. But this gets you in trouble when you pick up someone's offense, or you put on the cloak of their pain. Have your own support system in place so that after a session that leaves you particularly heavy you can make a call and talk it out. You can keep confidentiality with your client yet still share about what you are feeling with someone who you trust to walk you through it. And don't forget to give every client back to the Lord. You are meant to carry them to the Lord in prayer, not carry them on your shoulders.3. Don't take on what the client feels.Learn empathetic detachment, the art of lowering a ladder to someone who is stuck in a deep, dark hole rather than jumping in and commiserating with them, which gets both of you stuck. Be clear about your boundaries, and how you keep them, and don't let mercy and sympathy become enablers for either of you.These tips will help your client feel like they were really a part of the process and that they experienced growth! Use your knowledge to create a roadmap and give the client milestones and homework.Lay out the process you've created and keep clients accountable with homework such as questions to answer, focused instructional worksheets, and tasks to follow through on.
