(for most of us it’s been multiple, multiple times, often times as a child and usually many times a year). If you answered “Yes”: Antibiotics have their place and save lives, but in the past many decades, they’ve been handed out like candy! Most people have taken them many…many…MANY times by the time they reach adulthood. And continue to have them prescribed. Here’s the thing…antibiotics wipe out the “good” microbes in our bodies. This not only leaves a lot of room for the “bad” microbes to grow and flourish, it also means that the good microbes aren’t able to fight off the bad ones (that are now flourishing). This cycle happens over and over again every time we take antibiotics, creating not only a cycle of dis-ease, but also worsening the conditions over time as the parasites, fungus, bacteria - bad microbes - get a solid foothold and continue to grow, reproduce, and produce toxins in our bodies. (Candida alone produces up to 79 different Toxins, that damages the body, tissue and organs and lead to chaos in your immune system. And keep in mind that taking a look at fungi alone, there are up to 400 different species that have been found to cause harm in the human body!). Not only that, but our “good microbes” are the first line of defense for our immune system, create a ton of nutrients for us, are responsible for creating many of our positive hormones and important chemicals that affect our mood and well-being (like serotonin!) and much more. So when we don’t have any more (or at least not many more) of the “good microbes,” our whole body, well-being, mood, etc suffers in a big way. Question 2: Have I been on a cortisone type medication or blood pressure medication in the past? If you answered YES:We know that many different medications are really toxic to the good, health promoting microbes…these include cortisone type medications, blood pressure medications, hormone replacement therapies, several types of anti-acid/reflux medications, some types of anti-depressants and more. Question 3: For WOMEN: Have I used the birth control pill or hormone replacement therapy.If you answered YES: We know that taking hormones changes the biochemistry in our body and makes it less able for our immune system to respond properly. Additionally, it increases blood sugar, which feeds the “bad” microbes, therefore increasing infection. You can find much more information on this online!Question 4: Does my mom currently, or did she in the past, before I was born, have some of the same symptoms I’ve been experiencing?If your response was YES: Dysbiosis is passed down from parents to children, so if your mother had a proliferation of “bad” microbes and not enough “good” microbes, you were most likely born with that imbalance as well, even *before* you took any antibiotics that made it worse. Question 5: Did my mom take antibiotics in the years before I was born? If you answered YES: If your mother took antibiotics at any point in her life before you were born, there is a strong likelihood that you were born with an imbalance in your microbes…too many “bad” microbes and not enough “good” microbes, which also leads to a sub optimal immune system and all those things we discussed about antibiotics and dysbiosis in Question 1.
