There's something special about natural shapes that blend into their landscape...Cob is an ancient building material created by mixing the right ratio of clay, sand, and straw. Cob is among the oldest building methods dating back about 10,000 years! It is sustainable, it is durable, it is living in connection with the earth. Cob is praised for being a super healthy, non-toxic building option. It is also said to be extremely therapeutic! Cob houses can be and have been built pretty much anywhere. That being said, building with cob in dryer climates is probably going to be a lot quicker and less to maintain. If you do happen to live in a rainy or damp climate, no problem. As the old saying goes, "If a house has a good hat and a good pair of boots, it can last forever." Meaning, a solid foundation, and a good roof are vital especially in a wet climate.The earthen walls are a form of thermal mass that work to stabilize indoor temperatures naturally. But first, let's touch on the fact that this material is non-structural, meaning that it won't hold up your roof on its own. So you will need to incorporate a frame or skeleton and then infill the material. Hempcrete is the combination of hemp hurds, lime, and water that when mixed together, creates a strong, durable, and insulative material. It is poured into forms and tamped down layer by layer. Home Sweet Dome...Though requiring specialized tools to build with, these cute and crafty little domes are super accessible and are popping up everywhere these days!Aircrete is a low-cost, easy-to-build, insulative, and sculpturally beautiful dome-building technique. They are also known for their incredible resilience (for those in earthquake-prone areas).Aircrete looks similar to concrete, however, the major difference in the recipe includes - you guessed it! - dish soap!The soap is put into a specialized machine that creates a foaming agent. When mixed together with the cement and water, this creates a strong yet super lightweight material to work with!
