But it also seems that your symptoms are telling the story that your biggest underlying root challenge is: Hidden Trauma RootsAt a prime level, our body is conditioned to look for patterns in order to keep us safe. If the body perceives a moment to be traumatic, it will lock in specific aspects of that moment and label them as safe or unsafe. It then creates defense mechanisms and connects them to the pieces it believes are unsafe.For example, if you were abused by someone who wore a specific cologne, the brain may attach that specific scent to feeling unsafe. And then one day, you're in the grocery store choosing a zucchini for dinner and the scent of that cologne wafts past you and you are suddenly in a state of panic. The walls feel like they are closing in. Your heart is racing. You're sweaty and you can barely breathe. You have no idea why you're having a panic attack because consciously you are unaware of the connection between the cologne and the trauma. This subconscious connection is hidden from you, but your body is fully aware of it. It believes that danger is imminent and you must prepare to fight or flee the situation. Moments that cause full fledged panic attacks definitely get our attention. But what if the reaction isn't that dramatic and the fight or flight response triggers a less obvious response like a slow building migraine or lower back pain? Or maybe it presents as stomach distress which isn't really noticeable until you're back at home putting the groceries away? So you blame the gas and bloating on the new recipe you tried for dinner the night before or the fact that your period is coming in a few days. And you never even consider it's a deep seated trauma response to an abuse incident that happened 30 years ago. Hidden root trauma can underly any symptom, but what we see is they are nearly always the core reason for the "unexplained" symptoms. Especially for the clients who originally come to us feeling like the are "doing all the right things, but getting the wrong results." They are eating the "right diet," drinking enough water, working out, getting enough sleep, and all their labs are "normal" or even "optimal." They have done emotional work on their trauma and feel connected with Self and Source. They're doing well with boundary setting, speaking their truth, and remaining balanced in their every day life. But there's usually a nagging symptom that no matter what they've done... that symptom just hangs on. It's a way to get your attention and give you information about where there is imbalance or inflammation. When the body experiences stress - whether mental, physical, or emotional - that stress presents in various ways. When that stress isn't effectively processed and dissolved, it can compound or be layered onto other undissolved stress, causing the body to go into a fight or flight response - even if you do not notice it. In fact, symptoms are often signals that you don't notice, or are not responding effectively enough to unresolved stress. And therefore, the body will find a way to get your attention through symptoms such as headaches, PMS, digestive issues, sleeplessness, stubborn weight gain, pain, anxiety, and rashes. And eventually, if enough inflammation is present, it can then turn into more dramatic issues such as cancer or autoimmune. If you are good at bypassing the symptom by "pushing through," medicating the symptom to suppress it, or simply ignoring it, then you may not even realize the message behind the symptom because you're not hearing it. Every symptom means something to your body. Every symptom is there to help shine light on an imbalance and point out an opportunity for you to better connect with your body and soul. Here's a way to help uncover what your most frustrating or persistent symptom(s) mean.1. List when the symptom first started. Sit with this one and allow the answer to come to you. 2. What was happening in your life for the 6-18 months prior to the symptom appearing? (Emotionally, mentally, and physically? Was there a big life shift? Was there something going on that perhaps you didn't realize may have been a bigger stressor than you thought?)3. What are the benefits of the symptom and what are the drawbacks if the symptom were to go away. This part of the exercise is a bit advanced, but incredibly effective if done correctly. If you right away reacted to that question with a "There is no possible benefit of that symptom" then you are already tapping on the very door to your answer. I know that may feel frustrating. But everything our body does is a conversation with us. It's a way to express how we're doing and what we need. The annoying weight gain means something to us. For example, in one of our coaching clinics, a client expressed her frustration with her most annoying symptom - weight gain in her mid-section that she simply could not get rid of no matter how "perfectly" she ate or how many stairs she climbed. "It's really the only symptom I have left of the nearly 20 symptoms I had when I started working with you," she said. "I just don't understand it!"I gave her the homework to list out 30 reasons "being fat" as she said, benefited her. And 30 reasons why being a healthy weight would be a drawback. "This is ridiculous," she said. How could there be benefits to the symptom I want to get rid of?"Humor me," I said. "Let's see what comes up."After a week or so, she came to a clinic and had only 8 answers for the benefits and about 6 answers for the drawbacks. Number 4 on the benefits list said, "I won't starve! (hahaha!)"This was the entry point to her block. Even the fact that she wrote the "hahaha!" was an indicator that there was something deeper beneath her answer. I asked her, "Tell me about when you were starving." And her whole body and demeanor shifted. She got quiet, and told a story of when her husband left her. She was only 22 years old with two young babies. She found herself working three jobs and there were nights when there was only enough food for the kids. Though it was now 40 years later, she became an electrical engineer, her kids were grown with their own families, and she was financially stable... those moments of fear were still with her.She never left anything on her plate, even when she was full, and her extra freezer was always fully stocked, "just in case." This undissolved trauma was still part of her protective system and the extra weight was there to keep her safe from the danger of starving. Once we identified this underlying issue, we were able to help her process and release it and the weight came off. Your symptom means something to your body. Get curious on what the benefits are in that symptom and where the drawbacks to not having that symptom are. And your body will lead you to more answers when you are ready to see them.
