You are Listen all a Y'all!An absolute powerhouse in this collection, the Listen all a Y'all print is the cream of the crop. Really and truly, this piece was a turning point for me as an artist. She commands your eyes, she's in total control of her body and her voice. Visually, she is perfection in a 2-dimensional square. The contours of her face, the warm glow on her cheek, the play of curves and tonality shifts in her ear, the brow. There's SO much to breathe in! Can we talk about the pinky fleshy areas of her scalp! GUH. It's divine. The title arrived from the Beastie Boys song Sabotage. You know the hook, "Listen all a Y'all it's a sabotage." The energy of that song matched how I visually felt about this piece. Listening of the song while looking at this painting isn't required but it sure gets you in the zone! Say the Right Things with Your Eyes was pulled directly from the IBLP pamphlet, and a chapter heading in how a women should present themselves. Look closely to discover the broken lines of color that build her porcelain skin. The golden pinks that dot her brow - and the BROW! Aren't those bits of flesh that break through so lovely?Even her shadows don't fall flat as of alizirin crimson, violet, and phtalo blue penetrate the black strands of her. You are Stirring Secrets!Stirring Secrets is happy to be in her own head and confident in her own skin. She's the friend who trusts her intuition and fuels her soul with the spiritual.Stirring Secrets was originally created as a companion piece to Eternal Optimist. They were women in the same moment, but different parts of the photographic sequence. There are only a couple of women with eyes closed in this collection, which was intentional. The very nature of eyes closed recalls an inner dialogue. There's a lot of repitition in the work itself, like the use of the circle, the continuum (in fact I originally thought I might call her Circles.). Some of my favorite moments are the highlights of naples yellow along her forehead, the subtle darks in her hair (there's a lot of cobalt blue in there!), and the vertical lines of flesh in her neck. You are So Garish!So Garish is bold, and unapolagetic about it. Why should she?Red lips, yes please! Huge chunky earrings, yup! She may even wear her sunglasses at night?You know that ole turn of phrase “a spade is a spade”?That’s kind of how I landed on the title for this work.❣️So, the pamphlet that started it all described “appropriate dress” for women in the Christian (I say cult) movement IBLP. In one of the ACTUAL descriptions they wrote:𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘴.When I way glazing that yummy yummy cadmium and alizarin crimson in the 💋and 💃I kept thinking “sooooo garrriiish!”So, here’s the lady in red herself! You are Eternal Optimist!Eternal Optimist is a sun seeker. She's leaning into warmth and glow. She's your "classic" beauty, good vibes and flows in between time and space. Eternal could be present now, or fifty years ago. There's a little pause when you see her. Like a reminder to take a breath. Look closely to see the broken colors of sap green, yellow ochre, and alizirin crimsion that form the contours of her cheek bone, upper brow and forehead. Some of my favorite moments are the splay of light that dots her eyelashes, brow, bridge and fleshy cheek. She is juxtaposed, intentionally against a cool fabric to balance the warmth in her skin tones. The fabric in this piece was glazed to increase its chromal intensity. You are Sugar!Sugar is edgy fashion, aloof. She likes what she likes and she commands it.She loves hard angles mixed with floral moments. A bit Bauhaus meets French Countryside. 🍬Just like sugar, this painting is addictive to me. I can find so many nuances in it with every glance: the EAR, oh the ear (!!!), the delicate strands of hair on the nape of the neck, the cool green broken lines along the veins. Look closely to find specks of cadmium orange in the ear, the violets and pinks in the shadow beneath her eye, and cool greys surrounding the follicles of her hair. Your "Eye Trap" Painting Match is...Mahlah the Rebel!

Mahlah, the Rebel is a confounding painting. She is quiet strength, a visual story of light and texture, and a total joy to take in. Her namesake is a reference to a story in the Old Testament, which refers to Mahlah, and her sisters, inheriting land from their father. Despite not having a brother (the tradition was that inheritance went to the male heir), Mahlah and the sisters kept their birthright - a pretty revolutionary thing at the time. Mahlah is a women who is flawed but beautiful. I love that she has blemishes on her skin, no make-up, a simple ponytail. I highlighted all of those imperfections because they ARE beautiful. The ordinary is extraordinary. Look closely to discover the thousands of marks in her hair. Can you see the King's Blue or the desaturated violet? The broken lines across her forehead and the turn of her head, can't you just get lost there? In Mahlah, the Rebel you'll find she glows against her pale yellow background.
