Perfectionism
You're Stuck in Perfectionist PrisonHigh standards and superhuman expectations keep you from ever hitting the target. You're spending all your time and energy drilling down on details to avoid ever feeling judged or criticized. (Ex: the website that's still waiting to be published after 6 months of tweaking.)Here's what I want you to knowI live with perfectionism too. And while I'm being harsh when I read someone else's sales page or scroll through their IG carousel, I'm also jealous that they're doing the damn thing that I haven't done yet! Who cares if I found a typo in their copy, at least IT'S OUT THERE! They're connecting with potential clients while I'm still futzing with fonts! The Profit Reality CheckWhile you're drilling down on details, someone else has posted, published and booked an interest call! Hard truth? Most people won't read your entire website or newsletter. All the time spent making it "just right" is draining your energy AND keeping you from connecting with people who want to know what you're selling and if it can help them feel better. Here's How to Break Free Right NOWIt's not easy to just stop being a perfectionist, but here are 3 proven ways to loosen its grip:1. Calm Your Revved-Up Nervous SystemWhy this matters: Perfectionism keeps you in fight-or-flight mode. Your body thinks imperfection = danger.Cooling Breath Technique:1. Curl your tongue and inhale silently through it.2. Close your mouth, touch tongue tip to roof of mouth.3. Exhale through your nostrils.4. On each inhale, invite in a quality you want more of (peace, stillness, compassion).5. On each exhale, release what keeps you stuck in fear (comparison, criticism, judgment.)6. Continue for 3-11 minutes.Movement to Discharge Overthinking Energy:Stand with feet a little wider than hip-distance.Raise arms overhead, inhale.Exhale while hinging at hips, let arms sweep down towards the floor then up and behind you.Make a loud "AHHH" or "HAH" sound on the exhale (like karate chopping wood).Repeat 3-4 times and keep breathing throughout!2. Redefine "Perfect" vs "Good Enough"The Exercise: Take 5 minutes and make two lists "Perfect" checklist: What makes an email/post/website perfect in your mind? (No typos, perfect grammar, compelling story, flawless design, etc.) Perfection is often ambiguous so make it as clear as possible what you're aiming for. "Good Enough" checklist: Think about your friends, the people who don't judge you. What are you comfortable sharing with friends? A blog, an IG post? What is "good enough" for friends? Take it further, what feels "good enough" to share with your email list? Maybe the stakes are a little higher now. Now, what is "good enough" for the internet at large? Like a website - what standards are starting to creep in and make things harder? You're are looking for your MVP - Minimum Viable Product.Good enough gets results. Perfect gets stuck in drafts.3. Talk to Your Inner PerfectionistThis perfectionist part of you carries tremendous weight from all the internal pressure. It feels good to be heard so let it talk. Questions to ask:What are you afraid will happen if things don't go perfectly?Where did you learn that this terrible thing would happen if you eased up?What would it feel like if criticism and judgment were completely off the table?Listen to this part of you. It's trying to protect you, but it needs to know there are other options besides maximum effort 24/7.Want more support than just these steps?
