The Peacekeeper
Your pattern: “I feel better about myself when the people around me are happy with me.”You’re probably someone who is very aware of other people. You notice shifts in mood, think about how your decisions affect others and often know what someone needs before they’ve said it.None of those things are the problem. The pattern starts to get in your way when maintaining harmony becomes more important than being honest about what you need, want or think. You may recognise yourself in some of these:You find it difficult to say no when you know someone will be disappointedYou spend a lot of time thinking about how other people might reactYou can agree to something and only realise afterwards that you didn’t really want toOther people’s disappointment can make you question whether you’ve done something wrongYou sometimes keep the peace in the moment, then feel frustrated or resentful laterHow it can hold you backThe Peacekeeper is often very good at relationships. You can read a room, understand different perspectives and make people feel considered. But when your sense of okayness depends too heavily on everyone else being okay with you, their reactions can start influencing your choices more than you realise. You may avoid conversations that need to happen, soften what you really think, over-accommodate, or make decisions based on what will create the least friction rather than what actually feels right for you. What to start noticingThe goal isn’t to become less caring or considerate. It’s to separate caring about someone’s feelings from feeling responsible for them.A useful question to start asking yourself is:“If I knew they might be disappointed, but I also knew I wasn’t doing anything wrong, what would I choose?”You may still decide to accommodate them.Or you may realise that keeping the peace has been costing you something. And that difference is worth paying attention to.Want to understand your patterns more deeply, and start changing them?Recognising the pattern is a useful first step. But the interesting part is understanding how it shows up in your life, what keeps it going, and what you can do differently. That’s the work I do with my 1:1 coaching clients. If you’d like to explore what’s going on for you and whether coaching could help, you can book a free discovery call with me.
