Roommates
Somewhere between work, schedules, the house, kids if you have them, and life, the relationship started feeling more like a partnership than a romance. You still care about each other. You are still on the same team. But lately, a lot of your conversations may sound like:“Did you pay that?”“What are we doing for dinner?”“What time do we need to leave?”“Who is handling that?”You are getting life done together. But somewhere along the way, the relationship itself started getting whatever time and energy were left. And sometimes? There is not much left. Here is the part people do not always want to admit:You can love someone and still neglect the relationship. It usually does not happen all at once.It happens little by little.Less talking.Less touching.Less laughing.Less sex.Less time together that is not about work, bills, errands, schedules, or what needs to happen next. Before you know it, you are great at running a life together...but not so great at actually being together. And if that goes on long enough, resentment can creep in.You can feel lonely while sitting right next to each other. You can start snapping over little things that are not really about the little thing. You can start feeling more like roommates than a couple. The answer is not to become different people. And you do not have to start with some huge romantic vacation. You need to start making room for the two of you again.Start here:Talk about something besides life logistics. Give yourselves 15 minutes where work, bills, kids, schedules, and the house are off limits.Put time together on the calendar. Coffee. Dinner. A walk. Sitting outside. It does not have to be fancy. It just needs to happen.Put the phones away. Sitting beside each other while both of you scroll is not quality time.Stop waiting until everything else is done. The house will never be completely finished. The inbox will refill. There will always be another errand.Take something off your plate. Delegate it. Outsource it. Ask for help. Sometimes creating more connection starts with creating more room in your week. You do not need to become a different couple. You need enough breathing room to remember that you are more than responsibilities, schedules, and a shared to do list.
