The Safety Block
Does It Feel Safe In My Body? The Safety Block happens when the new life, goal, or version of you that you want still feels unfamiliar or overwhelming in your body.Maybe you consciously know you want something different… but every time you get closer to it, you start feeling anxious, stressed, worried, or like something might go wrong. This can happen because your nervous system is constantly responding to what feels safe, familiar, threatening, or uncertain. There’s a system in your body called the Autonomic Nervous System and it helps regulate automatic functions in your body like your heart rate, breathing, digestion, and stress response.Within that system, you have your Sympathetic Nervous System, which is your “fight or flight” response and activates when your body senses stress, threat, or danger. And then you have your Parasympathetic Nervous System, which is your "rest and digest" response which activates to bring your body back towards rest, recovery, and calmness. So if your body has become very used to stress, anxiety, pressure, fear, or constantly being on alert, new change can sometimes feel like a threat… even when the change is something you consciously want.So anytime you introduce something unfamiliar like a new belief, habit, relationship, level of success, visibility, responsibility, or opportunity, your body may react before your conscious mind even has time to think about it.That can look like:Your heart starts racing right before you post something online or speak up in a meeting. You start overthinking an opportunity that you were excited about five minutes ago.You finally get closer to what you want, but suddenly feel the urge to pull back, cancel, avoid it, or convince yourself you’re “not ready.”You start ruminating, imagining everything that could go wrong, or feeling like you need to take control. For example, maybe you want to become more visible online or be seen more in your career… but every time you’re actually given the chance to be seen, your body reacts with anxiety. You can consciously want the opportunity while another part of you is saying, “This feels like a lot, I don’t know if I can handle it.”So even if you consciously want to move forward, your body may keep pulling you back toward what feels more familiar. This can even look like finally getting what you want, but then self-sabotaging once you have it because holding onto that new reality still doesn’t feel safe or familiar yet. That is the heart of the Safety Block. The biggest thing you need to understand right now is:Your body isn’t trying to sabotage you, it’s trying to protect you based on what it has learned to recognize as safe and familiar. And since your current life, habits, thoughts, and emotional patterns have been familiar for a long time, anything new can feel uncomfortable simply because it isn’t ‘normal’ for you yet.So how do you change it?You have to regulate your nervous system around the new experience so your body can learn that change doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong or unsafe. This means repeatedly exposing yourself to new thoughts, actions, opportunities, and experiences while also learning how to bring your body back into a calmer, more regulated state as you do it.And this is exactly what I teach inside The Unforgettable Effect (UE).Inside UE, I walk you through my 5 step neuroscience-backed identity framework designed to help you identify the patterns keeping you stuck, regulate your nervous system around the change you want, and begin embodying a version of you that actually feels safe receiving, having, and sustaining that new reality.Since your biggest block is Safety, you don’t need to force yourself through more fear. You need to teach your body that the life you want is safe to receive, hold, and keep.
