Product recommendation quizzes increase sales by lowering the number of product choices for your customers. A study from the year 2000 found that by decreasing the number of product choices from 24 down to 6 you can increase sales by 10 times.
A product quiz can very simply take all of your product choices and recommend a lower number of products to each quiz taker. The products shown to each quiz taker are personalized to their tastes, interests, and preferences.
Here’s how to create your product recommendation quiz.
Create your own Product Quiz
Turn your store into an interactive recommendation quiz
Step 1: Choose which products or collections to include in your quiz
There are two types of product recommendation quizzes, depending on which one you want your approach to choosing products or collections may be different.
Type 1: Single product category quiz. This means you are creating a quiz that recommends a product within one category. For example, if you sell beauty products and your quiz only recommends face masks, which is one category of products you sell. That would be a single category quiz.
If you choose single category, select which products within that category you want to include in your quiz as recommendations at the end.
Type 2: Multiple product category quiz. A multiple category quiz means you are recommending products from different categories. For example, if you are a skin care brand and sell lotion, serum, and toner. A quiz that recommends products from all three of those categories at the end is a multiple category quiz.
If you choose multiple category, select products from all categories and group them into collections based on the type of person who would need each collection of products. For example: a collection of products for dry skin, one for oily skin, and one for combination skin.
Step 2: Turn your select products or collections into product recommendation quiz results
To convert your selected products or collections into quiz results there’s a formula to follow.
Type 1: Single category quiz results
The first two sentences tell the quiz taker in second person which outcome they got and what that means in an informative and friendly tone. Third sentence recommends specific products for the quiz taker based on their quiz outcome written in second person.
Here’s an example of a single category results (coffee). Thanks to Henry’s House of Coffee for letting us use their quiz as an example.
Notice that this quiz result is a Shopify collection. You can redirect your quiz results to a Shopify collection using the quiz result redirect.
Type 2: Multiple category quiz results
The first two sentences tell the quiz taker in second person which collection of products they got and what that means in an informative and friendly tone. The third sentence recommends a specific collection for products for the quiz taker based on their quiz outcome written in second person (your, your, etc.)
Here’s an example of a multiple product category quiz result (skin care products from multiple categories). Thanks to Esker Beauty for letting us use their quiz as an example.
Notice that this quiz result is built within interact and they used the quiz result CTA button to link to a Shopify collection for the product recommendations. Depending on your use-case this may be a better option, it just depends on the type of quiz you are creating.
Step 3: Write questions to figure out which product or collection is right for the quiz taker
Picture an in-person conversation and ask questions using “you” and “your” language to figure out which product or collection you would recommend to the quiz taker. We suggest 4-10 questions for a product quiz.
We have found that product quizzes perform best when the questions are very simple. Ask about what the customer wants, needs, and desires as related to the products you are suggesting in the quiz. There is no need for adding in extra questions for product quizzes.
Let’s look at a couple of examples.
First one is for the coffee quiz, the question presented is simple and relevant to finding out what type of coffee beans I should be recommended.
Here’s another example, with image answer choices, from the skin type quiz. This one allows for multiple selections.

Step 3: Give your quiz an eye-catching title
The best product quiz titles are short, direct, and obvious. The subject of your product quiz title is the person taking the quiz (your potential customer). The question your quiz title asks is which product or collection of products is best for your customer who is taking your quiz.
There are three product quiz title formats for single category quiz results and two for multiple category. Most successful product quiz titles follow these formats.
Single product category quiz title formats:
- Which (product) is right for you?
- What type of (product) is right for you?
- (Product) matchmaker
You can substitute words within those title formats as needed to fit your quiz.
Multiple product category quiz title formats:
- What is your (product use) style?
- What is your (product use) routine?
“Product use” means how the product is used in real life. For fashion, the product use is “style.” For skin care, the product use is “Skin care routine.” and so on.
