NASA Fosters Human Connection with an Interact Quiz

NASA worked with Naomi Crellin founder of storycraft LAB to create a quiz experience at Comic Con that was truly innovative and engaging. I interviewed Naomi to hear the behind the scenes of how the NASA quiz came to be. The following is a written and visual adaptation of that interview.

“Quizzes were one of the first things that we turned to as a way to think about true dialogue with an audience at scale… asking a question, getting curious, thinking about the taker of the quiz as a whole human.”

Logistically, the way the quiz was set up at Comic-Con was that you could scan a QR code to take the quiz, then once you found out your Moon Boots type, there were physical boots you could step into, take a photo, and learn more about your type. You can see a video of how it all worked here.

What I thought was really cool about the NASA quiz was how specific and inviting the language was. When I interviewed Naomi about that, it was clear that a ton of research went into every aspect of how the quiz was formulated.

“It allowed somebody from anywhere to, in a way, have a conversation using the same language as the NASA team.”

The conversational nature of how the quiz is constructed sparks curiosity and a sense of belonging from the quiz taker. When you answer the questions of the quiz, you really feel like you are part of something, and that draws you in. You can also lead people to something that they truly care about, and are interested to learn more about.

The quiz was such a hit that other agencies within the NASA umbrella began using it as an educational tool. It’s awesome to see the power of interactivity used to further education.
