We cannot stress this one enough—trim that wick or you’re in for a kick!

And when we say kick, we mean more like a slap in the face over how much mess you’ll be cleaning up. If the wick gets too tall, the flame will grow too, leaving black burn marks on the glass. A too tall flame can also wind up touching the glass, causing it to crack and spill hot wax all over your beautiful credenza. Save yourself the mess, and invest in a wick trimmer.

Like a candle in the wind...as much as we love the song, when it comes to keeping your flame burning, it’s best to stay away from open windows and that roaring air conditioning vent. Hey there! I’m Violet Verbena and I have a little story for you…

The story is how I would come to trade my life of “having it all” to losing my job, quite possibly my sanity and in turn, gaining the very life that was meant just for me.

Having graduated with a bachelors of Commerce, to later getting my MBA—I was on fire straight out of the gate to rule the corporate world. I was going to make waves as a fierce CEO and I leaned right into my masculine energy to make that happen.

By 2009, I was being recognized by some of the biggest head honchos in New York and had mastered how to “work the room”.

Life was good, right?! I was easily making 6 figures, fine dining, fancy trips, the whole shebang! The issue? All the forced smiles and constant hustle had me crumbling inside.

My soul longed for something more. It longed for something simple, and something that came from me.

Well, the universe must have heard my call, because in the spring of 2011, the company I worked for went suddenly bankrupt and before I knew it I was jobless, broke and headed straight for a world class rock bottom.

The irony was that even though my life was seemingly falling apart, I felt oddly relieved. Letting go of a life that was simply not for me was the most liberating feeling—it was as though for the first time ever, my life was actually my own.

For the first few months, the boredom was painful. I had been programmed for serious productivity, and that had all gotten stripped away from me faster than you can say “hot potato.” What was I supposed to do with all this free time?

So I just started doing things that fed my soul. I made soup, I spent time picking cherries in the orchard and tending to my garden. I knitted, and the most satisfying of all—I started pouring candles.

Don’t ask me why, but pouring candles became the single most satisfying and worthy art I could put my love into. Finding the perfect blend of scents, heating the wax and pouring each one with love soon became a devotional act. A ritual, if you will. This is how Dvotion came to be.
