What type of photographer are you?

From event to portrait photography, find out what genre best suits your interests. On top of that, I’m going to give you the tips you need to turn from a shutterbug into a professional photographer!

Take the Quiz

How long have you been practicing photography?

Under a year — I'm a newcomer to photography, but what I lack in experience, I more than make up for in excitement!

A year or two — I know my way around a camera, but there's a technique or two I still need to master before freelancing full-time.

Over three years — I've definitely had my fair share of practice! Now I'm ready to turn my passion for photography into a career.

Have you ever taken a course in photography, and if so, did you enjoy it?

Heck yes! I’ve taken several photography courses. I just can't get enough of learning the latest techniques.

Yes... but it wasn’t really my cup of tea. I don’t know if it was the instructor or the course’s content, but I didn’t feel like I got much out of the experience.

Nope, but I’d really like to give one a shot. I think my images seriously stand to benefit from an expert's guidance.

No... and I’m not interested. I’ve always been a do-it-myself kind of person. I guess photography courses just aren’t for me.

You’re strolling through a crowded downtown street market. What catches your attention?

The grey-haired palm-reader at the stall beneath the purple canopy. She looks like she’s lived an interesting life…

The spice seller’s swirling display of cinnamon, star anise, and coriander. Those colours are to die for!

The young, madly in love couple stealing a kiss by the fountain. I love catching those special, not to be missed moments.

The birds swooping in circles over the market. The light on their dark feathers is breathtaking!

3 / 9

What’s stopping you from taking up photography full-time?

There’s so much uncertainty. I just don’t know if it’s possible for me to support myself financially through photography.

I’ve always seen photography as more of a hobby than an actual career. What if my friends and family judge me for taking it too seriously?

TIME. I worry there aren’t enough minutes in the day to develop the necessary picture-taking skills!

4 / 9

Which picture speaks to you?

5 / 9

Which iconic photographer’s work are you head over heels for?

Man Ray — I love his cross-media approach to photography. He was an artist in every sense of the word...

Andy Warhol — Who else could turn a soup can into a cultural symbol? His genius and sensitivity are unparalleled.

Annie Leibovitz — Her portraits perfectly capture their subjects’ personalities.

Henri Cartier-Bresson — Cartier-Bresson sure knows how to capture a moment. He cuts to the heart and soul of his surroundings.

You’ve just received a big cheque from your first freelance photography gig. If you had to spend it on one of these, which would you pick?

I’d take a few close friends out to dinner at the new Thai restaurant downtown. I love making memories — and snapping pics along the way.

The designer candle set I’ve been eyeing up at Nordstroms. The packaging is so crisp and clean it’s a wonder I’ve been able to hold off for this long.

One of the abstract expressionist paintings at the little gallery I frequent. The bright colours are so energizing…

I’d spend it on an in-person cooking class. It’s so entertaining watching the other participants trying to perfect their dishes… And also who doesn’t like eating?

7 / 9

What’s your biggest strength when it comes to photography?

Imagination — I come up with elaborate concepts then bring them to life!

Personability — I understand people, which makes authentically photographing them a breeze.

Entrepreneurial spirit — I know what people look for in an advertisement, and what I shoot tends to sell.

Attention to detail — I’ve got a sharp eye for the little things often overlooked.

8 / 9

What type of camera are you currently shooting with?

A top of the line DSLR!

A point and shoot… Don’t judge me.

My smartphone’s camera.

A Polaroid. I’m all about the vintage look.

1. Get Comfortable With Your Camera!

Take this as your invitation to dig out that dusty DSLR and snap some pics. They don’t have to be masterpieces — your only goal is to get to know your camera’s unique knobs and buttons.

Take a quick flip through its instruction manual, but remember that when it comes to photography, learning is a hands-on experience 👋 And the fastest way to buck up is… you guessed it! By doing.

2. Say Goodbye to Auto Mode

Three manual settings separate shutterbugs from professional photographers: shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. This trifecta controls how light or dark your image is and how much of it is in focus. And once you get these basics down pat…

Move on to focus techniques and composition! Take cues from your photography idols. What about their images excites you? Can you use their techniques in your own work?

3. Find Your Niche

You’re a... Fine Art Photographer

You’re an aesthetics aficionado, friend. You’ve got a natural knack for noticing compositions! Where your friends see a crowded city street, you see a gallery’s worth of potential pictures…

You’re confident in your artistic vision — images of products and corny portraits just don’t interest you. You want to create something that speaks to your viewer’s soul.

Passion isn’t your problem, but knowing what to do with that passion might be another story. Luckily, I’m here to point you down the professional photography path. Trust me, you’ve got the stuff!
