How to Use Quiz Results to Start Better Client Conversations

A quiz can be a really good conversation starter. Someone takes your quiz, gets their result, and now you have something specific to talk about together. Their result and the choices they made give you a jumping-off point for getting to know them.

I had this experience with Effective Fitness. I took their workout-style quiz, and somebody over there followed up with me afterward. It was really cool because it was such a smooth transition into a conversation. We could chat about my workout style and the choices I had chosen on the quiz.

That’s a useful way to think about what your quiz can do. You’re giving someone an experience that can lead naturally into a conversation with you.

The topic of the quiz gives you somewhere to start. With a workout-style quiz, you can talk about the kinds of workouts someone enjoys, how they like to exercise, and what makes a workout feel like a good fit for them. Those are things a fitness business would want to understand about a potential client anyway, and the person has already spent a little time thinking about them while taking the quiz.

When you’re choosing your own quiz topic, think about the conversations you enjoy having with the people you work with. What do you like learning about them? What do they enjoy sharing? A quiz that touches on those things gives you material you can come back to when you follow up.

The result is one place to begin, and the individual answers can give you other things to ask about. Someone’s result gives you a broader picture of their workout style, for example, while a particular answer might give you an opening to ask about their routine or preferences.

You can let the person expand on what they’ve already shared. A quiz answer is usually short. In a conversation, they can tell you more about what that answer means to them.

For an illustrative example, imagine someone’s answers suggest that they enjoy having structure in their workouts. You might ask:

“What do you like about having a workout plan to follow?”

That gives them room to tell you more. Maybe they enjoy seeing their progress over time. Maybe they like showing up and knowing what to do. Maybe having a plan helps them make room for exercise during a busy week.

Those are different conversations, even though they started with the same answer. The follow-up gives the person a chance to bring their own experience into it.

Keep that first question easy to respond to. You already have a shared topic, so you can pick one thing you’re curious about and let the conversation develop from there. Pay attention to what they say next. Their response can guide your next question and help you understand what matters to them.

This can work in an email exchange, a message, or a conversation on a call. The useful part is the connection between the quiz they took and what you’re asking them about afterward. They can see why you’re bringing it up, and they have something familiar to respond to.

As you get to know each other, you may find a natural opportunity to talk about how you could work together. What they share can help you explain which part of your service would be relevant to them. Let that recommendation grow out of the conversation.

What stood out to me about Effective Fitness was how smoothly the quiz led into that interaction. We could talk about my workout style and my answers, and the conversation had somewhere to go.

When you look at your own quiz, consider what you would be curious to ask someone after they took it. That’s a useful starting point for your follow-up.
